What is a DOT Number?

DOT number, officially known as USDOT number (US indicates that it is an American number) are a series of numbers serving as an identifier for a company, recognized by the FMCSA gov (Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration). DOT numbers consist of 1-8 digits depending on when it was it was issued by MOTUS Registration system. FMCSA uses this number to oversee a company’s safety record, track incidents and compliance. Whether you’re involved in transporting cargo, passengers, or hazardous materials, obtaining a DOT number is important.

Who Needs a DOT Number?

In general, you will need to acquire a USDOT number from MOTUS, if you plan to engage in any of the following activities with your company:

  • Uses vehicles weighing over GVWR, GCWR, GVW or GCW of 10,001 pounds (4,536 kg) or more
  • Has employees operating commercial vehicles on an interstate.
  • Transports passengers for hire (specifically 9-15 people).
  • Transports more than 15 people for any purpose.
  • Moves hazardous materials of any type.
  • Operating as a Broker (property, non-exempt commodities), Freight Forwarder, Intermodal Equipment Provider or a Cargo Tank Facility.

What is a MC Number?

MC number (motor carrier number) is an Operating Authority with FMCSA DOT gov. You only need a MC number if you operate across state lines for compensation (for hire). Moving companies, Passenger Transporting and Federally regulated goods that cross state lines all need an MC number. Some companies may be required to get an MC number to work with certain brokers and companies as well. Other operating authorities include freight forwarders and household goods brokers.

No, you only need one USDOT Number for your company. The DOT Number should be displayed on the sides of all your commercial vehicles. If you have an MC Number, the same rules apply.

What do I need to get a DOT Number?
  • Business information (name, location, etc.).
  • Personal information for FMCSA contact purposes.
  • Details about the operation classification you are seeking.
  • Specify whether you will transport people or cargo.
  • A valid address.
